Any information is available in split second due to the rapid growth in Information Technology. To add speed to the ready availability of information we also have online search engines, mobile phones, radio, television and newspapers.

In the Arthashastra, Kautilya says that a person needs to be well-informed. This makes us think why this information is required.

Realizing what is known: Some information we get is already known to us. For example, India winning a cricket match could be direct information via news telecast and morning newspaper. This information has very less value addition.

Cross-checking uncertain information: Certain times the information provided is half-baked. Say the director of a particular company has quit, now this information is uncertain. This has to be cross-checked.

Conflict of information: let us say a situation where a hotel has been publicized as 5 star property by its marketing team while the news is that it is only a 4 star hotel. In this case, the right information can be obtained from the hotel’s management or from the tourism board.

Most information is not correct. They could be gossips, rumours, people’s viewpoints, etc. Most important – all information is not required; we need to take what we require.
